Description
Piper Elementary School
Piper takes pride in being facilitators of learning that enriches their students’ educational experiences by giving them a voice, choice, and sense of audience. Each student has one-to-one iPad with 24/7 access. Students can also use iPad over the summer to participate in Virtual Summer School. All staff have a MacBook and iPad, and classrooms have Apple TV.
Students use iPad and apps to decide how they’ll meet learning objectives and standards. One student may choose to use an iMovie trailer to share a book review while another will create a Keynote presentation. iPad and Apple apps enhance the learning opportunities that students are given to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in a meaningful way.
Piper made a transition to standards-based grading in 2015 as part of a districtwide initiative. This decision came about largely from the mindset that the technology afforded to the staff. It became clear that with the dynamic work students were producing, a simple letter grade system didn’t accurately demonstrate the learning that was occurring in the classroom.
Piper teachers and students participate in iEngage-Berwyn, a two-day event when visitors from around the country are welcomed into the classrooms of the district’s schools. Over the past two years, more than 800 educators have visited, with students being eager to share their work and classrooms.
